Scientific analysis allows the identification of the materials used by the artist, to determine their compositions and to understand ageing.
We invite you to discover some pictures of scientific tests and analysis performed:
Cross section 40x magnification
The cross section shows:
- Gray and ochre paint layer
- Several white, white-gray and purple washes
- White coating
- Green paint layer
- Tuffeau stone
Crosse section SEM The scanning electron microscope allows to produce high resolution images.
Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy EDX The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy allows to determine the chemical composition of the layers present in the cross section. In this case, the green paint layer was analysed. The spectrum shows the presence of copper and oxygen and traces of aluminium, silicon, calcium and sulphur. The green paint layer could consist of two pigments, malachite CuCO3 • Cu (OH) 2 or verdigris Cu (CH3COO) 2 • H2O. Given the impurities, it is more likely that we are in presence of malachite..
